KING, Frederick Ben
SGT, age 19. Died November 25, 1968 when the Jeep he was in hit a buried road mine just outside the main gate of LZ Bronco, near Duc Pho. Editor’s comment: I was the company clerk for Delta Company from June 1968 – April 1969. Fred was headed home and had gone to Bronco’s air strip for a flight that morning. However, it had been delayed. So, he returned to the orderly room rather waiting at the terminal. He was lounging in a chair on a small patio Charlie Company shared with Delta Company, when Ellison (a supply clerk) asked, if he wanted to ride “shotgun” into Duc Pho to pick-up ice. Fred agreed and they sped off in their Jeep. When we heard the news about the blast, we were all shaken-up. The road was supposedly swept for mines earlier in the day. Fred was a great guy and well respected. It was such a tragedy and one I’ll never forget. David Shea, webmaster.
