WINDER, David Francis; Pvt. First Class, age 23 was serving as a medic assigned to Alpha Company when he was killed in action on May 13, 1970. He received the Medal of Honor for his efforts to save men while under intense enemy fire. The citation reads: \n
\n\n
\n\nPFC. Winder distinguished himself while serving in the Republic of Vietnam as a senior medical aidman with Company A. After moving through freshly cut rice paddies in search of a suspected company-size enemy force, the unit started a thorough search of the area. Suddenly they were engaged with intense automatic weapons and rocket-propelled-grenade fire by a well-entrenched enemy force. Several friendly soldiers fell wounded in the initial contact and the unit was pinned down. Responding instantly to the cries of his wounded comrades, Pfc. Winder began maneuvering across approximately 100 meters of open, bullet-swept terrain toward the nearest casualty. Unarmed and crawling most of the distance, he was wounded by enemy fire before reaching his comrades. Despite his wounds and with great effort, Pfc. Winder reached the first casualty and administered medical aid. As he continued to crawl across the open terrain toward a second wounded soldier he was forced to stop when wounded a second time. Aroused by the cries of an injured comrade for aid, Pfc. Winder's great determination and sense of duty impelled him to move forward once again, despite his wounds, in a courageous attempt to reach and assist the injured man. After struggling to within 10 meters of the man, Pfc. Winder was mortally wounded. His dedication and sacrifice inspired his unit to initiate an aggressive counterassault which led to the defeat of the enemy. Pfc. Winder's conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the cost of his life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the U.S. Army. \n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

TECHMEIR, Larry Lester; Staff SGT, age 22; Died July 14, 1969 from wounds received during an early morning sapper squad attack on Hill 4-11, West of Quang Ngai Airfield. For his actions, SGT Techmeir was awarded the Distinguish Service Cross. The citation reads:

\nThe President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Larry Lester Techmeir, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving with Company A, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry, Americal Division. Sergeant Techmeier distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 14 July 1969 while serving as a platoon sergeant during the construction of Fire Base 411 near Quang Ngai. In the early morning hours, Sergeant Techmeier, who was on listening post, observed five enemy sappers moving through the wire perimeter. Immediately notifying the command post of the danger, he began maneuvering toward the hostile force. Suddenly the members of Sergeant Techmeier's platoon opened fire on the infiltrating element. As the enemy returned a heavy volume of fire, two of the North Vietnamese managed to penetrate the wire and flank the bunker. Rising from his position, Sergeant Techmeier charged the two invaders, killing one and causing the other to flee. Obtaining permission to pursue the retreating enemy, he and three of his men went beyond the wire to reconnoiter the area. Just as they passed the outermost wire, a hostile element pinned them down with strafing automatic weapons fire and grenades. After Sergeant Techmeier killed two enemy soldiers, he was severely wounded by an exploding grenade. Rushing the thrower of the grenade, he killed the enemy soldier and captured his weapon. As he was returning to his men, he succumbed to his wounds. Sergeant Techmeier's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty, at the cost of his life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.\n

The citation reads:\n<\/br>\n<\/br>\n\nThe Distinguished Service Cross is presented to William Jackson, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving with Company C, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry, Americal Division. Private Jackson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 March 1969 during a combat sweep operation near the village of Tap An Bac, approximately twenty miles southeast of Quang Ngai City. While his unit was making its way through thick underbrush, hedgerows and clusters of bamboo, several small groups of North Vietnamese soldiers were spotted. Searching the dense terrain, Specialist Jackson saw four enemy troops moving to a bunker and immediately opened fire, single-handedly killing all four and capturing their weapons. As his element continued forward, it came under fire from a hostile fortification which wounded the radio-telephone operator. Private Jackson courageously exposed himself to the communists to draw their attention and to place accurate return fire, enabling two men to rescue the casualty. When he and his comrades were securing the area so the wounded man could be evacuated, they started to receive heavy fire from another enemy position. Shooting his rifle and hurling hand grenades, Private Jackson made a direct assault on the stronghold and succeeded in silencing it. An ambulance helicopter began to land, but was engulfed by enemy fire. Private Jackson braved a hail of bullets to engage the aggressors, and was mortally wounded by the hostile fusillade. Specialist Four Martin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 March 1969 during a combat sweep operation near the village of Bich Chieu, in Quang Ngai Province. As his company was struggling through thick underbrush, hedgerows and bamboo, it suddenly came under heavy fire from a well- concealed bunker. Specialist Martin spotted the stronghold and led two comrades on an assault, killing four North Vietnamese soldiers in the position and capturing their weapons. His company continued its advance and made contact with another concealed enemy force. Seeing that one of his men had been seriously wounded and lay trapped under the hostile fusillade, Specialist Martin rushed into the bullet-swept area and carried the man to safety. A short time later, while his unit was again moving through open terrain, the communists sprang an ambush, firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades from three sides. After locating the enemy bunker which was the greatest threat to his element, Specialist Martin jumped a hedgerow and single-handedly assaulted it. During an intense exchange of fire between him and the North Vietnamese soldiers in the fortification, he was mortally wounded. Charlie Company had been sent in to reinforce Delta Company, which had become pinned down in heavy enemy fire. SGT. Daniels was awarded the Silver Star for Valor, posthumously. The citation reads: \n

\n\nFor gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Daniels distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 14 July 1969 while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry. On that date, the company was conducting combat operations near Duc Pho when the lead element came under intense fire from a well concealed enemy force. During the initial enemy attack, several friendly soldiers fell wounded and exposed to hostile fire. Taking immediate action, Sergeant Daniels quickly deployed his men to positions of cover and directed their retaliatory fire on the insurgents. Utilizing fire and movement tactics, Sergeant Daniels moved to a point over an enemy flank position. Then with complete disregard for his personal safety, he assaulted the enemy emplacement firing his weapon and completely destroyed it. Spotting a wounded comrade in an open area, Sergeant Daniels directed his men to provide covering fire for him as he moved toward the injured man. During this rescue attempt, Sergeant Daniels was seriously wounded.\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\nSergeant Koning distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 February 1970 while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company C, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date, elements from the company were moving along a trail southwest of Fire Support Base 4-11, near Thuan Hoi, when they came under intense hostile automatic weapons fire from a well concealed enemy force. Responding immediately, Sergeant Koning began maneuvering his men against the insurgents. With complete disregard for personal safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy fusillade as he closed with and destroyed a key emplacement. Upon regrouping the platoon, Sergeant Koning spotted a comrade suffer a serious wound and fall helpless in an exposed position. Realizing the extreme urgency of the situation, he swiftly moved to the side of his fellow soldier and skillfully administered first aid. After carrying the man to a secure rear location, Sergeant Koning returned to the point of contact and began assaulting the remaining enemy bunkers. During this action, he came under additional fire and was mortally wounded. His courageous and timely actions were directly responsible for saving the life of his fellow soldier and served as an inspiration to the remainder of the unit. \n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\nThe President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963) takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Frank Allen Hill III, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Hill distinguished himself by intrepid action on 3 August 1969 while serving as the Battalion S-2 Officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date, Captain Hill was accompanying a friendly infantry unit as it moved toward and enemy stronghold near Quang Ngai City and found a large bomb crater with a tunnel located on one side. As a small group advanced to investigate, the entire company came under intense hostile fire from a well-concealed enemy force. Captain Hill immediately took a covered position and began placing supportive fire on the insurgents to alleviate pressure on several friendly soldiers who had been trapped in the crater. At this time, he spotted a wounded comrade lying in an exposed area. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Hill quickly crawled through the heavy volumes of hostile fire being directed against him to the wounded man. After pulling the casualty to safety and administering first aid he again braved the enemy fire and returned to the battle area to attempt to extract another fallen comrade. During this time, Captain Hill was struck by several hostile rounds but continued to engage the insurgents until succumbing to his wounds. Bomaster<\/a><\/td>\r\n\r\nRichard<\/td>\r\n\r\nLloyd<\/td>\r\n\r\nForward Observer attached to C Company, 3rd\/1st<\/td>\r\n\r\nRichard was the FO for Charlie Company, 3rd\/1st.  On a sweep through an area northwest of Quang Ngai City on August 12, 1969, the APC that Richard was riding on was hit by an RPG.  Richard was struck in the left temple, left shoulder, left hand, and the left knee.  His radioman was blown out of the APC, and Richard tried to save his life without success.  The wound in his left temple rendered him unable to remember what happened that day.  He was unconcious for 16 days and woke up in the Valley Forge Army Hospital.<\/td>\r\n\r\n12-Aug-69<\/td>\r\n\r\nRichard contracted pneumonia while recovering and had chest surgery but recovered.  Between Japan and stateside, he spent 8 months in the hospital and cannot remember what happened that day.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n

Busbee<\/a><\/td>\r\n\r\nLarry<\/td>\r\n\r\nMichael<\/td>\r\n\r\nD Company, 3rd\/1st<\/td>\r\n\r\nD Company was ambushed in the Horseshoe Valley in February 1969.  They had just finished \"BATHING\" in the Song Tra Khuc River and had only moved up the trail maybe two or three hundred hundred meters when they were ambushed.  Larry was wounded while walking behind the pointman.  Another grunt was wounded in the shoulder.  Both were Medivaced to the 312th in Chu Lai.  Larry's wounds healed, and he was sent back to the field about a month later.  The other grunt's wound turned out to be more serious because a bullet had riccoched off a bone and cut an artery to his heart.  He died on the operating table.  Larry remembers his face but not his name.<\/td>\r\n\r\nFeb-69<\/td>\r\n\r\n: Larry was treated at the 312th Evac Hospital in Chu Lai and was sent back to the field about a month later.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n

Cole<\/a><\/td>\r\n\r\nRobert<\/td>\r\n\r\nOwen<\/td>\r\n\r\n1st Platoon, D Company, 3rd\/1st<\/td>\r\n\r\nDelta Company, while reconning a series of tunnels 10 miles west of LZ Bronco for the second day, was drawn into a NVA battalion sized ambush which lasted most of the day.  \"Rocky\" was killed in a crossfire while pinned down on high, open ground.  Doc Lambardo was lying next to Rocky when he was hit.  Rocky died quickly.  This was the worst incident ever for KIAs in the 11th LIB history - 5 KIAs: William Gould, Lt Claybough, Michael Wilkins, David Styles, and Robert \"Rocky\" Cole; WIA SFC James Smith, G. Gourley, J. Rivera, \"Chapel\" and many others.<\/td>\r\n\r\n29-Mar-69<\/td>\r\n\r\nRocky was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star posthumously.  He is geatly missed and was memorialized with a Bronze plaque at his high school during a 35th reunion in 2002.  A synopsis of Rocky's Vietnam tour and death is cited on pages 177-179 in the book \"Country Joe and Me\" by Ron Cabral.\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n

Snyder<\/a><\/td>\r\n\r\nHenry<\/td>\r\n\r\nB.<\/td>\r\n\r\nC Company, 3rd\/1st<\/td>\r\n\r\nC Company had just finished night manuevers in the Rice Bowl area west of LZ Bronco.  LZ Bronco was attacked by mortars on the same night.  The next day about 7:30 a.m. C Company was called to help out a sister company and walked into an ambush of 300 NVA.  This was the same force that attacked LZ Bronco the previous night.  C Company was reduced from 100 men to 14 who were not injured.  Hank was wounded early in the battle.  He received one round (AK-47) in the rear chest that exited through his abdomen.  He also received three pieces of shrapnel from what he believes was the last round he fired from his own M-79.\r\n<\/td>\r\n\r\n12-May-69<\/td>\r\n\r\nHe was evacuated by COL George Ellis' helicopter after the regular Dustoff refused to land.  He was patched up at LZ Bronco,and sent to Chu Lai for surgery by noon that same day.  He was sent to Japan, and then to Ft Dix, NJ.  He served out the rest of he tour and was discharged 16-Jun-70.  He now lives and works in North Carolina.\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n
Straub<\/a><\/td>\r\n\r\nWilliam<\/td>\r\n\r\nJ.<\/td>\r\n\r\nC Company, 3rd\/1st<\/td>\r\n\r\nCPT Straub was the CO of Charlie Company at the time he was shot in both legs by automatic fire as he attempted to launch an attack against an unknown NVA force that had ambused the Company and had several members wounded and pinned down in open area.  CPT Straub was evacuated by \"dustoff\" to LZ Bronco and eventually to Japan where he is believed to have recovered from his wounds.  His where abouts is unknown.  He was a great CO.\r\n<\/td>\r\n\r\n15-Mar-69<\/td>\r\n\r\nSurvived and was evacuated to Japan for extensive treatment and rehabilitation.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n

Williams was wounded when Company C was ambushed by a battalion of NVA. \r\n<\/td>\r\n\r\n12-May-69<\/td>\r\n\r\nHe was evacuated to Bronco, then to Chu Lai, and eventually to an Army hospital in Colorado.  After a serious infection had developed, his left leg was amputated below the knee.  He lived in Long Beach California after a medical discharge.  His current whereabouts are unknown.\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n

Yawn<\/a><\/td>\r\n\r\nRobert<\/td>\r\n\r\nJames<\/td>\r\n\r\nC Company, 3rd\/1st<\/td>\r\n\r\nI was with the 2nd Platoon.  We had worked down a hill to meet the rest of Charlie Company.  We had set up a perimeter that afternoon.  After getting resupplied and getting mail, we dug in and were attacked by motar fire from the hills in front of us.  I was hit in the left arm, right leg, middle finger on the right hand, and the lower back.  I was dusted-off to the 21st Evac at LZ Bronco, and the next morning I was flown to Chu Lai to the 91st Evac Hospital.  This was in May 1970.  LT Wood was our Platoon Leader.  I was also in the fire-fight when Chuck got shot through the jaw.<\/td>\r\n\r\nMay-70<\/td>\r\n\r\nAfter my wounds healed, I was sent back to the field.\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n\r\n
